Sir,
Downing Street.
28 June 1899
With reference to your Despatch 2014 of the 24th March last,
I have the honour to inform you that I have selected
Mr Arthur William Grant B.A. on the recommendation of Professor Lewis, Doctor of the Cambridge University Scholastic Agency
for appointment as Junior grade assistant master, Queen's College Hongkong.
2. I regret that it should have been found impossible to complete
Mr Grant's appointment at an earlier date,
but owing to the long
vacation month at the Queen's College, it appears to me inexpedient at the present time to hurry his departure.
3.
The Crown Agents will be desired to provide him, on his signing
the usual agreement, with a free passage to the Colony by the
next convenient steamer sailing after the 20th prox.
You will be good enough to give him a formal letter of
appointment when he arrives in the Colony, stating that you appoint
him on the conditions embodied in the Despatch from this
Department of the 19th ulto., a copy of which is annexed.
You will observe that Mr Grant is appointed at the same salary as Mr James or of whose offer you were informed by
Despatch no 182 of the 21st July 1898.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient humble Servant,
